The color wheel is a visual help on what colors can be combined and which can't. With its help and following these principles, it should be very easy for you to make your choice.
1) Choose opposing colors in the circle that contrast with each other. For example, red and green.
· Pros: You won’t look dull.
· Cons: There is a risk of looking like a parrot.
2) "Neighboring" colors that complement each other. For example, blue and purple.
· Pros: Safe and skillful combination.
· Cons: the tie could merge with a jacket that does not look very nice.
However, to choose the right color is a half part of the process. To look nice, you have to try your combination and see if the feedbacks are as good as you expected. And remember that the tie usually should be darker than the shirt.
Next, look at how to choose a tie to a specific color shirt.
White shirt
White shirt is a universal and basic element of every man’s wardrobe. Every type of ties fits a white shirt, should it be plaid, solid black, pin-dot, striped, or geometric.
Blue shirt
For the blue shirts are suitable:
· Dark ties with patterns (polka dot , striped)
· Opposite colors such as orange, yellow, red, which put an accent on the shirt’s color. Moreover the additional color for blue is green. This combination will give you a very smart look.
Pink shirt
Here, the same principle applies
· For a tie of a same color, choose dark shades of pinks or purple.
· To give a contrast you should prefer green or blue.
Striped shirt
To choose a tie for a striped shirt is a bit more complicated. There are a few rules:
· Strips go well with strips, but they do not have to be the same size. If a shirt has fine strips, the tie should have large ones and vice versa.
· Colored ties (or one of its strips) should have the same or an opposite color to one of the band’s shirt. For example, a blue shirt with pink strips suits ties with following colors: blue, red, dark green tie.
Check shirt
For check shirts, too, there are certain subtleties for matching ties :
· The tie should be either monophonic or with a large picture . Otherwise ties with small prints lose their effect on the shirt’s background.
· Cells can be combined with cells , but as mentioned above, for a perfect match, cells on your tie should be larger than those of your shirt.
· Striped ties are well suited for the plaid shirt . Choose a tie with great bands that fit the color of the cell on the shirt .
